In New Zealand partners have historically stayed with one firm for their entire career, however this is beginning to change. Partner-level moves are far more common in other jurisdictions such as the UK and Australia and there is a growing trend here as well now. It would be impossible to even attempt to sum up any advice in such limited space with so many options open to you. You might be contemplating a move in-house or into government, continuing to climb the ladder in practice, a move overseas, a change of practice area or something different entirely.

The main thing to remember is that sometimes you will be able to take great strides, sometimes only baby steps, but what is most important is that you are heading in the right direction.

Securing your first legal role can be a real challenge, particularly in recent years. Most law firms recruit entry level roles directly and so realistically a recruitment consultant will not be able to make applications for you in most circumstances. It is important that you do your research, are persistent and remain positive. You should make use of any contacts you have and keep up the door-knocking – albeit in a virtual way these days.
